Cervical Neck Pain
The neck is made up of the first seven bones in the vertebrae, going from the shoulder blade up to the base of the brain. The main functions of the neck are to support the head and protect nerves that send messages from the brain to the body.
There are 2 kinds of neck pain.
1. A pain that goes from the shoulders down to the arms. The pain is dull and there might be weakness in the muscles of that area. One thing that might cause this is a bulging disc or a herniated disc. The discs are soft material that exists between the vertebrae to provide cushion between them. Since the discs are soft that are easily pulled out of shape or they begin to bulge. This causes great discomfort because the nerves that come out of the spinal cord may become pinched of the bulging disc. This type of neck pain can be caused by whiplash or even arthritis.
2. The second type of cervical neck pain is hard to diagnose because the pain is actually weakness in the legs and arms. This can be caused by whiplash or by keeping the back and neck is a constant position. An example of that would be someone who works on the computer all day.
